How can my puppy/kitten have worms? 

Almost all puppies are born with intestinal parasites passed from mother to pup during pregnancy. Although kittens are not infected when they’re born, they can become infected through their mother’s milk. Puppies can also become infected while they are nursing. Puppies and kittens should be dewormed every 2 weeks, starting at about 2 weeks of age for puppies and 3 weeks of age for kittens. After the biweekly series of dewormings is finished, monthly deworming should begin (at about 8 to 9 weeks of age for kittens and 12 weeks of age for puppies).

Does my pet need a dewormer if I can’t see parasites?

Parasites aren’t always easily visible, even when looking at your pet’s feces. Parasites are best detected through physical exams and laboratory tests like bloodwork and fecal analysis. Since there’s no way for pet owners to confirm if their pet has parasites on their own, dewormers are recommended as a preventative measure. Some other ways you can reduce the risk of parasite infections for your pet include: 

• Watching out for signs of infection like vomiting or diarrhea  
• Cleaning up after your pet’s feces 
• Ensuring your pet doesn’t eat feces 
• Removing any stagnant water from your yard 
• Washing your hands after touching your pet
