New Pet Owner Information

Our team can help you navigate your experience as a new pet owner.

Congratulations on your new family member, and welcome to this wonderful and rewarding new chapter of your life! Clearspring Animal Hospital is the perfect place to start your journey as a first-time pet owner, whether with a new puppy or kitten or a freshly-adopted shelter animal. Here, you will find everything you need to keep your new pet happy and healthy so that you can tackle this new responsibility with confidence and support.

Pet Services Your New Pet Will Require in the First 12 Months

Veterinary Exam (First Appointment, Ongoing)

Good veterinary care starts with the first appointment! Our support staff will take a thorough history so that the veterinarian can address any concerns you may have. The doctor will complete a nose-to-tail assessment to ensure your pet is healthy, and we will provide a steady stream of treats to teach your new dog or cat that the vet isn’t so bad, after all.

Puppy Vaccinations and Kitten Vaccinations (Week 8, Week 12, Week 16)

Puppy and kitten vaccination programs set your new family member up for success from day one and will keep them protected from communicable diseases throughout that crucial first year of growth and development. Younger animals need a little extra help keeping their immunity strong, and timing their vaccines up through sixteen weeks of age gives them the boost they need to stay healthy.

Dog Vaccinations and Cat Vaccinations (Every 1-3 Years)

Vaccines protect against infectious disease for cats and dogs, keep immune systems strong and healthy, and even protect humans against zoonotic diseases that can pass between animals and their owners. Once your pet is a patient, we will keep their vaccine history in our records and ensure that you are kept apprised of which vaccines are due with every year that passes.

Dog and Cat Deworming (Week 2 up to 6 months)

Nobody likes to think too hard about intestinal parasites—which is why we’re here to help your family, furry and human alike, stay safe! Our veterinarians will talk with you about your pet’s risk level for parasitism and set up a schedule for deworming that is tailored to your pet’s needs and lifestyle.

Dog and Cat Spaying & Neutering (Around 6 months)

Spaying or neutering your pet is a cornerstone of responsible ownership and constitutes a major component of our surgery services. These procedures eliminate or significantly reduce several potential health and behavioral risks for your pet, not to mention their impact when it comes to controlling pet overpopulation. Our staff is always happy to discuss the benefits of spaying and neutering, to go over the particulars of these surgical procedures, or to make an estimate for your perusal.

Dog and Cat Microchipping (Anytime)

Microchipping can double the chances of a lost pet returning home and provide you with peace of mind that permanent identification is linking your contact information to your pet. We commonly microchip pets during their spay or neuter procedure, but it can be done at any time, and our team can register that microchip for you as well to ensure their protection against getting lost begins the moment they walk out of our hospital.

Dog and Cat Flea & Tick Control (Year-round)

Year-round parasite prevention is essential for your pet’s health and safety, especially in the Lower Mainland - and it can be a key part of keeping you and your family safe, too. We can dispense broad-spectrum flea, tick, and parasite preventives for your pet anytime when we have an up-to-date annual exam on file, and we are always happy to discuss your options with you.

Dog and Cat Diet (Anytime)

Age, lifestyle, breed, and health conditions—countless factors can influence your pet’s specific dietary needs. Our veterinarians, as well as our nutrition counselor, are passionate about keeping pets properly nourished and can address any questions or concerns you may have about diet.

Puppy Socialization Classes & Cat Training (<12-18 months)

Puppyhood and kittenhood represent a great opportunity to teach habits that your pet will maintain for life. Socialization is crucial, not to mention paw handling, desensitization, and training—yes, even for cats! Ask our team about the options available for you to set your new pet up for a lifetime of good behaviour.

Pet Health Insurance and/or Veterinary Savings Account

The joy and enrichment of pet ownership don’t have to come hand in hand with unexpected costs in the event of an emergency. Clearspring Animal Hospital recommends requesting quotes from a variety of pet insurance providers, or even just funneling a set amount each month into a ‘Veterinary Savings Account,’ to guarantee that you’re ready to provide for anything your pet may need, whatever the future holds.
