Vaccines for Puppies & Dogs

Vaccines are an effective way to protect your pet against harmful diseases.

Puppies receive a series of vaccinations during the first few months of their lives, which continues with boosters throughout adulthood. Following your pet’s vaccination schedule is as important as vaccinating them. Missing a dosage increases your pet’s risk of being infected by various preventable diseases.

Why do puppies need vaccines?

Puppies receive some protection from infection while nursing because their mother’s milk provides antibodies. However, this protection is only adequate for their first few weeks of life. Puppies are more susceptible to a range of diseases because their bodies haven’t developed immunity against them. Vaccination is the best way to provide your pet with some protection against diseases that could otherwise be fatal. Starting when your puppy is 6 to 8-weeks-old, they should receive the following vaccines:

  • Rabies: A deadly neurological disease
  • Distemper: A highly contagious respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous system disease
  • Parvovirus: Gastrointestinal illness, especially harmful for puppies

Does my pet have to get a rabies vaccination?

Manitoba requires pets to be vaccinated against rabies. These laws help protect both pets and people from this deadly disease. Thanks to rabies laws, control/prevention programs, and pet owners’ cooperation, domesticated pets in North America rarely become infected with this disease. By keeping your pet up-to-date on their rabies vaccination, you are not only protecting them but also helping to eradicate rabies from the pet population in your community.
